Defence of Marion Tharrey's thesis
Marion Tharrey, a doctoral student at the UMR Moisa, defended her thesis on December 2020 at the Institut Agro / Montpellier SupAgro. Her thesis is entitled: "Impact of participating in a community garden in the city on the adoption of more sustainable lifestyles".

Summary
La création de jardins partagés urbains suscite un intérêt croissant de nombreux acteurs qui y voient un levier pour améliorer la santé physique, mentale et sociale des citadins tout en contribuant au développement durable des villes. L’objectif de cette thèse était de déterminer si les jardins partagés peuvent être un outil efficace pour promouvoir la santé des citadins, mais aussi des styles de vie plus durables, dans un contexte français. Une revue systématique de la littérature sur le lien entre la participation à un jardin collectif urbain et la santé en population générale adulte a souligné les limites de la littérature existante dominée par des études transversales, basées sur des déclarations et menées dans un contexte nord-américain. L’étude quasi-expérimentale JArDinS a été mise en place afin d’évaluer l’effet de la première année de jardinage sur la durabilité des approvisionnements alimentaires mensuels des foyers des jardiniers (qualité nutritionnelle, impact environnemental et coût), le niveau d'activité physique des jardiniers, leur bien-être mental et social, ainsi que leur sensibilité au gaspillage alimentaire et leur lien avec la nature. Notre étude n’a pas mis en évidence d’impact positif de la participation à un jardin partagé sur les variables mesurées. Ces résultats sont appuyés par une évaluation qualitative qui souligne les freins et limites des jardins existants. A l’heure où de nombreuses villes envisagent d’implanter des jardins partagés sur leurs territoires, cette thèse invite à réfléchir à de nouvelles formes de jardins partagés qui favoriseraient l’intégration et la participation active sur le long terme d’individus ayant des profils culturels et socioéconomiques variés. Une évaluation de ces nouveaux formats de jardinage au moyen d’études interventionnelles fournira des preuves de la pertinence ou non d’utiliser les jardins partagés pour accompagner la population urbaine vers l’adoption de styles de vie plus durables.

The rise of food access research is intimately tied to availability of GIS technology and data on store locations. This presentation discusses the importance of mapping technology in shaping food desert research as well as research on the environmental impacts of health in general, as well as the use of food desert in popular communication. Much of the power of the term lies in the use of maps. The food access or “desert” concept visualizes inequality through the use of GIS. The fact that studies of food access often begin and end with easily accessible store address data, which is also easy to put into a map, has promoted the analysis of food access data by academics and non-academics alike. This presentation will discuss basic findings of GIS and qualitative food access projects in Chicago. The presentation will then focus on issues with these and many other food access research projects, as well as debates about how to analyze them, which are often overlooked in public discussions. The presentation continues by addressing the history of popular discourse on food deserts and the importance of community-based work in addressing food access issues, and finally gives suggestions for future research and action.
